Security starts with where data lives
The most reliable way to secure a recording is to limit how many places it exists. Every upload to a cloud transcription service, and every transcript sent to an AI provider, is another copy on another system with its own access controls, its own logs, and its own breach risk. Secure transcription minimizes that by keeping the work on your own machine. In LiteScribe, that is the desktop Local Mode.
When Local Mode is on, your audio is transcribed on your CPU or GPU and your transcript is summarized by an on-device AI model, with neither step leaving your computer. There is no third-party copy of the audio to protect, and no external model handling your transcript. For sensitive recordings, that structural reduction in exposure is worth more than any single security feature layered on top of a cloud pipeline.
What "secure" does and does not mean here
We want to be precise so the security claim is trustworthy. Local Mode means your recording and its transcript are processed on your device and are not uploaded to a transcription or AI provider. That removes a large class of exposure, namely third-party storage and processing of your content. It does not, by itself, encrypt your local disk, manage your device access, or replace your organization endpoint security, those remain your responsibility.
The desktop app also is not air-gapped. It downloads the on-device models once, and it reconnects to LiteScribe periodically to validate your plan and remaining minutes. That account traffic does not carry your audio or transcript. Nor will we be vague about sync: the finished transcript is pushed to your own LiteScribe account by default so it is readable on your other devices, and switching that off in Settings, Privacy is what keeps the text on the machine alongside the audio. So the honest summary is an unconditional no-upload guarantee for your media, no third party ever touching your transcript, and one sync switch you own.
Who secure transcription is for
Secure, on-device transcription fits any workflow where uploading the recording is the wrong default. Legal teams handling privileged client conversations, healthcare professionals with patient discussions, finance and corporate development teams on deal calls, HR on sensitive employee matters, and journalists protecting sources all share the same need: the audio should not be sitting on someone else infrastructure. Local Mode keeps it on the practitioner machine instead.
You also retain per-recording control. Routine transcripts can keep syncing for convenience, while a sensitive one is locked to this machine. That lets a single person or team use one tool for both everyday and confidential work, choosing the privacy posture per recording rather than per account. Teams that want the strict posture as their baseline can turn transcript sync off globally and unlock individual transcripts instead.

What is private, and what is honest
Privacy on this page means the desktop Local Mode, where your audio is transcribed on your own CPU or GPU and an on-device AI model writes your notes, so your recording is never uploaded and no outside provider ever sees your transcript. The web app, the mobile app, and the cloud path are different: they use a cloud transcription service and cloud AI, so they are not private in this sense. Local Mode is a desktop feature on the Pro and Business plans, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux after a one-time model download.
We will not call the app air-gapped, because it is not. Your audio stays on your device, but the desktop app reconnects to LiteScribe periodically to validate your plan and remaining minutes, and it pauses new offline work if it cannot check in for about two days. That account check carries none of your content. One more thing worth saying plainly: the finished transcript syncs to your own LiteScribe account by default, so you can read it on your other devices. Turn off "Sync new local transcripts to cloud" in Settings, Privacy, or lock an individual transcript, and the text stays here with the audio.
